The A Jean Brugger Foundation continues its community service work in San Juan del Sur, bringing education and essential resources to the areas most in need. Recently, a group of students receiving scholarships from the foundation made a visit to the community of La Libertad, a remote town located south of the mountains of San Juan del Sur. An hour from the city center, with no access to buses due to the distance and limited access to cell phone signal, the community faces several barriers to accessing basic information and services, which makes these visits vital.

The main purpose of this visit was to hold a workshop on sexual and reproductive health, aimed at girls, adolescents and mothers in the community. The activity was led by students who received scholarships from the foundation, all of them studying health-related careers. The young Jimena Lugo, who is a fifth-year medical student at UNAN (National Autonomous University of Nicaragua, Carazo campus), and who also coordinates the group of this social initiative, commented that the workshops address crucial topics such as puberty, adolescence and knowledge of the menstrual cycle, fundamental aspects for the well-being of the participants.
María de Jesús Martínez Torrez, a resident of La Libertad and mother of three sons, expressed her gratitude for the initiative. At 43 years old, she recalled that in her youth she did not have access to this type of information, which makes her greatly appreciate the efforts of the foundation. “When I was little, my mother never talked to me about these issues. These visits are of great help to the girls and adolescents in the area,” shared María, reflecting the positive impact of these workshops on the community.

The workshop was attended by more than 15 women, who received personal hygiene kits at the end of the day. These kits, donated by the American organization Days for Girls, include handmade ecological sanitary pads, menstrual cycle calendars, intimate soap and other essential items for personal care. Ingrid Collado, who is the coordinator of the community social service program, accompanying and technically guiding the scholarship students in the different social initiatives promoted by the Foundation, highlighted that the relationship with Days for Girls has been maintained for more than 15 years, allowing this type of support to be distributed to different communities each month.
The monthly tours of the A Jean Brugger Foundation are a demonstration of the organization’s commitment to the health and well-being of the rural communities of San Juan del Sur. These activities not only provide education, but also foster a space for dialogue and mutual support among the women of the area. In addition, they allow the scholarship students to apply their knowledge in real situations, contributing to their comprehensive development.

The impact of these visits is evident in the improvement of the quality of life of the participants and in the strengthening of the social fabric in the communities visited. The A Jean Brugger Foundation, through its community social service program, continues to be a fundamental pillar for the promotion of health and education in San Juan del Sur, demonstrating that adequate knowledge and resources can transform lives.
