Emily Danisha Canales Selva, 17, is a brilliant young woman from San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua, who is about to finish her secondary studies at the Emmanuel Mongalo y Rubio Institute. With an outstanding grade point average of 98, her academic career reflects the effort and dedication she has maintained throughout her school life. Emily lives with her grandmother, who has become her main support and authority figure.
Inspired by the admiration she feels for her grandmother and with the hope of improving herself, Emily dreams of studying general medicine and, eventually, specializing in trauma surgery. Her interest in medicine stems from her passion for understanding how the human body works and the possibility of helping others in emergency situations.
The Jean Brugger Foundation is an organization committed to the educational development of Nicaraguan youth with limited resources who seek to improve their lives through education. Since Emily learned about the foundation, she has received technical support in the development of her documentary research to complete her secondary studies. The foundation is responsible for managing scholarships for talented young people who do not have the resources to cover the costs of a university degree. In 2024, Emily has requested a scholarship from the foundation to make her dream of entering the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua (UNAN) in Managua come true, where she has already completed her pre-enrollment.

Emily is one of 17 young people in her community who, together with the Jean Brugger Foundation, are looking for sponsors to help them pursue higher education. For Emily, the possibility of having the support of a sponsor means much more than financing her education; it represents a unique opportunity to transform her life and make her family proud, especially her grandmother, who has encouraged her to «be smart and get going» to achieve her goals. The figure of her grandmother has been fundamental in her personal and academic development, as she has instilled in her values such as responsibility, effort and perseverance.
Emily’s story symbolizes the dedication and effort of hundreds of young Nicaraguans who dream of a better future through education. In San Juan del Sur, many students like her struggle to have exemplary academic performance, but economic limitations stand in the way of their aspirations to pursue a university career. For this reason, the Jean Brugger Foundation is calling on potential sponsors to join this project and support talented young people who want to make a difference in their communities and in the country.
If Emily had the opportunity to speak directly with a potential sponsor, she would tell them that «the opportunity to help someone with their studies is unique, since not everyone has the conditions to study on their own.» With a tone of gratitude, she would emphasize how valuable it would be for her to have support that allows her to continue her studies and make her way towards a career in medicine, a career that will benefit her community and contribute to her country’s health system.
The call from Jean Brugger Foundation is urgent: more sponsors are needed to fulfil the dreams of Emily and 16 other young people who want to study a professional career and lack the necessary resources. Each sponsor can make a significant difference, transforming not only the life of the student, but also that of their families and their communities.
