In the late 1980s, David, just 41 years old, set foot on Nicaraguan soil for the first time with a group of 15 friends. The initial mission was simple but deeply meaningful: to collaborate on community projects such as access to drinking water and painting schools in the neighborhoods of San Juan del Sur. Without knowing it, that first trip would mark the beginning of a relationship of love and commitment to a country and its people.

On subsequent visits, the group discovered the work of the Jean Brugger Foundation and found in it a cause that resonated deeply in their hearts. Since then, they have dedicated their efforts to supporting young people with college scholarships, giving them opportunities to fulfill their dreams. With over 20 visits to Nicaragua, David has cultivated a special bond with the young people he and his friends have sponsored, meeting with them on each visit to learn about their stories, motivations, and dreams.

David has fallen in love with Nicaragua not only for its natural beauty, but for the warmth of its people. “Nicas are eating and laughing. They love life, family, and have a great sense of humor,” he says with a smile. That joy of living, even in the midst of difficulties, inspires him deeply and strengthens his commitment to the cause.

One of David’s most special memories is that of Yarisleidy, a young scholarship recipient whom he met in 2012. In her he saw a fighting spirit and an immense desire to get ahead, qualities that made him feel identified, especially as the father of two university-aged daughters who have accompanied David on his trips to Nicaragua. The story of Yarisleidy and so many other young scholarship recipients is a living testimony of how a small act of support can transform lives.

This December, David will return to Nicaragua again, moved by his love for the country and its people. He will take advantage of his visit to spend time with the scholarship recipients and will possibly return in February 2025 with his group of friends. Each trip reaffirms his connection to Nicaragua and his commitment to continue supporting those who fight for a better future.

This Christmas season, the Jean Brugger Foundation extends a special thank you to all the sponsors who have contributed to changing so many lives over the years. Your generosity has not only allowed the young people to achieve their goals, but has also inspired an entire community. Thank you for being part of this effort and for showing that the true Christmas spirit is in giving hope and building dreams. If you wish to become a donor, visit our website under the donate tab.
